The “New” Kikones
Domaine Kikones is proudly the first winery founded in 2004 in Rodopi, in the far north-eastern corner of continental Greece, by Melina Tassou, Agricultural Engineer - Bordeaux trained Winemaker.
Domaine Kikones has only received a state subsidy once in the last ten years and this was namely the Developing Women's Employment and Enterpreneurship Scheme, reaching € 8.000 from a budget of € 1.200.000 . Today Domaine Kikones employs seven people full time and ten to fifteen people part-time during harvest time.
Domaine Kikones' main concern is to revive the fame of Thracian vineyards in Greece and abroad. Due to this, the winery has been named Kikones, to pay tribute to the first natives who made wine on Thracian land.
Melina Tassou is an Agricultural Engineer - Bordeaux trained Winemaker. After her studies, she worked in famous wineries all over the world in order to gain experience. The wineries where she acquired experience are:
Château Malescot St Exupéry, Margaux, Bordeaux, France. 3° Grand Cru Classé.
Château Smith Haut Laffite, Pessac Leognan, Bordeaux, France. Grand Cru Classé.
Domaine Christophe Perrot – Minot, Morey St Denis, Burgundy, France.
Brown Brothers, Milawa, Victoria, Australia.
After this valuable experience, she came back to Greece in 2004 to make the first new wine of «Kikones». Using the knowledge she gained in her enological adventures, she applied the most suitable techniques in the vintage and the vineyard concerning the soil and the climate of Thrace, in order to make the best wine possible.
Her philosophy is based on the best techniques in grape growing and vinification. Respecting wine as a natural product, the winemaker applies the minimum technological interference in order to preserve the true character of each wine according to its vintage, while the most important decisions are made by tasting the products every day, even during fermentation. The scientific methods of quality control are based on the School of Bordeaux, but the vineyard is inspired by the Australian modulation system and the traditional vintage from Burgundy. Combining all these techniques, Domaine Kikones has created the Thracian vintage!
